The complete performance package for both high flow and cold air for the Porsche 992 Carrera, -S, -GTS
BigPack - intercooler and pipes sold together!
Alongside this intercooler kit we also offer a range of other products. This BigPack also includes intercooler pipes and the matching hose for further flow and better durability!
In our view this kit is as good as an intercooler kit for this platform can ever be designed. We have examined every last detail in order to reach maximum performance in every given aspect of the system. The cores from the time-honoured Garrett Motorsport are beautifully made and exactly to the specification we judged to be optimal in terms of heat transfer versus air flow. The end tanks are made from thin cast aluminium to keep the weight down and optimise flow. To accommodate a larger core, the air guides are replaced with our own guides in the best quality carbon fibre! The connections on the intercooler have been made larger to eliminate bottlenecks in the system, and the hoses supplied are, as always, produced with soft, sweeping transitions. We made no compromises in this development - here is the result!
Key features:
- Lower intake temperature under the same test conditions: 30°C (39°C). 9°C lower.
- More oxygen for the engine, less back pressure and better flow!
- Air flow at 0.175 bar / 2.54 psi pressure drop: 919 CFM (820 CFM), 12% higher!
- High-quality motorsport-grade bar and plate cores from Garrett.
- 3D freeform-designed cast end tanks.
- Specially designed carbon fibre air guides.
- Supplied with high-quality silicone hoses and accessories for fitting.
- Ports for methanol injection (2x 1/8 NPT) in the intercooler's outlet tank.
- Powder-coated, mandrel-bent charge pipes with hose and clamps of the utmost quality.
Background:
When Porsche launched the 992 it had abandoned the naturally aspirated concept for the Carrera models. All 911s are now forced induction, which makes this entry-level model very interesting for those who want to reach high power figures as well! Every car has its own particular conditions, and the layout of the intercooler system on the 992 in particular is completely different from earlier generations of turbocharged cars from Porsche - but the principle is of course exactly the same. With our experience from earlier developments we took on this project with great confidence. As a pioneer on the market for this platform, high demands were placed on precision and forward thinking. We are proud of what we have to offer 992 owners!
While earlier generations of the Porsche 911 have their intercoolers in the respective rear wing, with a Y-pipe connecting them before the charge air reaches the intake, the 992 has a completely different arrangement. The intercooler and Y-pipe are now a single unit sitting directly under the rear wing. The air is forced through ducts from the rear window down to a scoop, and through the core for maximum heat transfer. The active wing plays an important role by directing a considerably larger volume of air downwards when raised. Seen from the outside this solution appears more rational, but it also places further demands on us as a manufacturer of performance coolers. Fitting a core with a larger surface area / volume requires new air guides for it to fit at all. We are glad that this product allowed us to take our carbon fibre production to the next level - fit and finish worthy of a car like the Porsche 911!
Cores from Garrett:
The cores are of the bar and plate type from the renowned Garrett Motorsport and are of the utmost quality. Thin, densely packed cooling fins give a solid construction that guarantees efficient heat transfer. The core measures a full 105 mm in thickness and is, in our opinion, exactly as thick as is ever possible. The air is distributed across the whole core via freeform-designed cast end tanks. An immense job that involved 3D scanning, CFD analysis and repeated rounds of 3D printing to get everything right. As before, we chose to use cast end tanks, since they often allow shapes that CNC machining cannot manage, and form never comes before function for us. Maximum flow matters more than the bling factor! The tanks come with machined connections of 2.75"/70 mm to make high power figures possible on top of that. Added to this are unique hoses that match these larger connections. The two cores are joined by a central cast tank with a CNC-machined connection to the throttle body and ports for methanol injection.
Carbon fibre air guides:
The air guides are made from vacuum-formed prepreg carbon fibre mat, and every piece has mounting lugs for the air ducts just like the original ones. The shapes are very complex, but we guarantee a perfect fit! The two upper guides are always the same regardless of equipment, but for the two lower ones there are two alternatives: Standard or SportDesign, the latter having better evacuation of the cooling air. Our measurements show that SportDesign really does contribute to increased cooling efficiency, but as mentioned we offer unique air guides for both variants. The guides are supplied with sealing strips where required, to seal tightly against the engine bay and prevent the cooling air from sneaking past the cores.
Charge pipes:
Our BigPack also includes our pipes and hoses - a true upgrade that replaces the original's thin hoses. Made from 63 mm mandrel-bent aluminium tubing and then powder-coated in a tasteful, satin-matt black colour, they offer increased flow and better durability over time. Four silicone hoses are supplied with them, of which those at the turbo outlet are made with a special high-temperature reinforcement that withstands 240°C continuous temperature. The hose clamps in this position are also of the “constant tension” type, to take up thermal changes in the material.
Performance:
As far as performance is concerned, do88's intercooler kit gives a noticeable reduction in intake temperature! The graph below the product images shows the difference compared with the 992 Carrera OE intercooler. All data was collected with our AIM racelogger during five immediately consecutive accelerations on an airfield. Full-throttle acceleration from 50-250 km/h in a Porsche 911 Carrera S (450 hp). Then hard braking, no cooling down between the runs, just full throttle!
The tests were carried out as follows:
First, five runs were made with the OE 992 intercoolers fitted. Stop, quick change of parts on the spot. A few minutes of warming up and then five runs with the do88 intercooler, in exactly the same way as with the OE one a few minutes earlier. The temperature reduction is striking - a maximum difference of 9°C, see the graph below the product images. Cooling is important, but so is flow. After countless hours at the drawing board refining and smoothing the end tanks, combined with a core to meet our requirements, we have a result that speaks for itself. With our own Superflow SF-1020 flow bench we have verified the flow for both the OE 992 and the do88 intercoolers. What you see is what you get - true performance!
