Complete do88 performance intake system, designed for a drop-in fit in the BMW M2C / M3 / M4 F8X The BMW M2C / M3 / M4 F8X has a twin-turbo engine (S55) with two air filter boxes that supply the turbochargers with air. The original air filter boxes have relatively small panel filters, which makes them fairly restrictive for air flow. Our goal when we started developing our new intake system was that it had to be an enclosed system, so that it does not draw hot air from the engine bay as, unfortunately, many aftermarket systems do. If the air filters draw in hot air from the engine bay, that immediately gives a higher intake air temperature (higher IAT). Throughout all the tests carried out while developing our entire BMW F8X M2C / M3 / M4 product range, we see clearly how power is directly linked to the intake air temperature and the air flow to the turbochargers. To obtain an exact 3D model of the space available for designing our intake system, we made a detailed 3D scan of the engine bay in our own BMW M3 Competition. We found that we could fit twin-cone BMC air filters with a large filter area; these flow well over a long period (the small filters many people use flow worse after a short time in use). We also designed new 3" (76 mm) inlet pipes, laid out with as few and as smooth bends as possible to reduce resistance. To prevent hot air being drawn into the air filter, we designed heat shields and lids which, together with rubber seals, mean that our system feeds the engine with good, cold air. Our intake system draws fresh air from the original ducts that lead out behind the grille at the front. Our tests have shown that these are not a restricting part of the system. When the car is up to speed, a pressure zone builds up behind the grille, so adding scoops to the fresh air ducts (as some do) will not make much difference other than impairing the air flow to the radiators behind. Our inlet pipes are made from mandrel-bent 76 mm (3") aluminium tube. Both the inlet pipes and the heat shields are finished in a matt black textured powder coating. For the airbox lids we chose a light polycarbonate material with a satin black finish. All these improvements have resulted in an impressive power increase of +10 hp at the top, and in the mid-range we see up to +20 hp / +40 Nm. This test was carried out on our M3 with BootMod3 Stage 1 (93) software. Key features of the do88 intake system (reference value for the original part in brackets): - +10 hp peak power increase! - +20 hp / +40 Nm increase in the mid-range! - 769 CFM air flow at 0.025 bar / 0.36 psi pressure drop (678 CFM), do88 13% higher! - The BMC filters are washable for a long service life! - Improved intake sound! If more intake sound is wanted, the system can be used without the lids on the heat shields. Under certain driving conditions this gives a higher intake air temperature.
